After a long winter of not being used, your air conditioning unit will require a bit of work to get it ready for the summer. If you have a dog, or a neighboring dog that likes to lift his leg on your air conditioning unit, one step you will have to take is cleaning the urine off of the internal and external components of the unit. Here, you will learn how to do just that.

Supplies Needed

  • Screwdriver
  • Hose and nozzle
  • Enzymatic urine cleaning solution and spray bottle
  • Rust-breaking spray
  • Cup

Shut off the Power

Before you begin ripping into the unit, you must first shut off the power to it to avoid electrical hazards. This can be done at the breaker panel or if your unit has an exterior breaker, you can turn it off.

Remove the Grill

Get your screwdriver and remove the screws that hold the grill on the front of the unit. If the screws won't turn easily, use some rust-breaking spray and let it sit for a little while. The spray will work to break-down the rust so that you can turn the screws with ease. As you remove the screws, set them in a cup so that you don't lose them during the project.

Set the grill aside after lifting it off.

Apply the Enzymatic Cleaner

This cleaning product is amazing. All that you need to do to effectively clean urine off of virtually anything is spray it on, let it dry and then rinse the area.

Use the spray bottle to apply a generous amount of cleaner to the unit. As the solution dries, it will target and break-down the protein in the urine that causes it to stink.

After the solution is applied, walk away and let it dry for an hour or two.

Rinse Well

Use your hose and nozzle to rinse the unit well. Don't use full pressure as you spray the unit or you could cause connections and wires to come loose.

Replace the Grill

The urine that would have filled your home with a ghastly smell when turned on has now been removed. You are now ready to re-position the grill, replace the screws and restore power to the unit.

To eliminate the need to go through this procedure every spring, consider building some sort of enclosure to keep dogs away from the air conditioning unit through all of the changing seasons. To learn more, contact an air conditioning repair company like Kassel Appliance & Ac Repair
